Honda CR-V is believed to be the first small SUV in Indian market. Being in a Honda CR-V suits at every occasion be it a red-carpet event, a corporate presentation or a match of golf. Honda CR-V is not just a four-wheel SUV, it is a status symbol. There are many schools of thoughts in this regard but most probably, CR-V is an acronym which stands for ‘Civic Recreation Vehicle’ as suggested by many sources. This is because it is evident that CR-V is based on Honda Civic sedan.
Honda CR-V crossover was first introduced in 1996 by Honda Motors globally. This is the only SUV offered by Honda India till date. Honda produces the vehicle in Japan and UK for most of the markets across the globe. In India also, CR-V is brought as a CBU (Completely Built Unit) and this reason speaks for the voluminous price of Honda’s SUV.
Honda has recently unveiled the new 4th generation CR-V. As seen from the pictures, styling of the new car is a departure from the current model with the new model looking more menacing.
Instrumental panel inside the car is well designed and very easy to be controlled. With enough cargo space it is equipped with many convenient features along with a foldable picnic table under the trunk carpet. For normal conditions Honda CR-V is powered by front wheels. In harsh situations rear wheels can also be made to use. As the front wheels lose traction and start slipping, the rear wheels kick in to help. This is accomplished through the use of viscous clutch to engage the rear wheels. A high ground clearance of 185 mm gives this SUV a manly appearance; although the looks are softer when compared to extremely masculine Toyota Fortuner or Chevrolet Captiva SUVs. There are number of cup holders and storage compartments, there is even a storage box under the front passenger's seat. The rear seats fold almost flat for extra cargo space. It is available in both front and four-wheel drive.
Very stylish interiors, powerful engine and many safety features like front seat airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags (total 6), antilock brakes, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution and vehicle stability assist with traction control are the major attraction in Honda CR-V. The G-CON technology used in Honda CR-V provides a safe driving experience. It goes a step ahead and re-examines the frame structure thus allowing the collision energy to be absorbed and dispersed. CR-V’s crash compatibility seeks to enhance self-protective performance while reducing the extent of car-to-car collision damage. With FCX Clarity (Fuel cell vehicle), Honda CR-V is world’s first dedicated platform hydrogen powered vehicle with zero emission. Innovative ideas like FCX Clarity have pushed mobility beyond the realms of the conventional car.
It was one of the first small car-like SUVs in the market. Many customers appreciate the unique combination of low fuel consumption, four-wheel drive, spacious interior and reliability. Thanks to light yet tensile monocoque construction and light weight (1475 kg for 2WD and 1595 for 4WD AT); the Honda CR-V has very predictable car-like handling. However, the 2012 CR-V will be built on an all-new platform which should further improve the CR-V’s renowned car-like handling. The Honda’s all-wheel drive system is very helpful on slippery roads, although it's not designed for real off-road adventures.
Current Honda CR-V is powered by i-VTEC 2.0 litre and other 2.4 litre petrol engine. The one with 2.0 litre engine is two wheel drive. The engine is mated to a six speed manual transmission. The other with higher capacity engine is real time four wheel drive version which also gets an option of 5 speed automatic transmission in addition to basic 6 speed manual transmission. While the former churns out a maximum power output of 143 Ps, the latter gives out 161 Ps of power.Honda CR V 2.0L 2WD MT
